Mission
DOE is one of the six federal departments that participates in both the SBIR and STTR programs.
DOE’s mission is to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions. The DOE SBIR/STTR programs have three overarching goals: catalyze the timely, material, and efficient transformation of the nation’s energy system and secure U.S. leadership in energy technologies; maintain a vibrant U.S. effort in science and engineering as a cornerstone of our economic prosperity, with clear leadership in strategic areas; and enhance nuclear security through defense, nonproliferation, and environmental efforts.
DOE topics vary from release to release and are generated from 13 program offices with mission-specific R&D needs. DOE offers more than sixty technical topics and 250 subtopics, spanning research areas that support the DOE mission in Energy Production, Energy Use, Fundamental Energy Sciences, Environmental Management, and Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation.
