SBA
In October 2006, the Arrowhead Center was awarded nearly $1 million from the Small Business Administration (SBA) to create an Entrepreneurship and Small Business (ESB) Program. The ESB Program was designed to support small businesses in New Mexico. The funding is used to enhance the scope of the small business research program, accelerate small business incubation and Research Park efforts, disseminate business information and economic studies to help small businesses make more informed decisions, and provide entrepreneurial mentoring and training.
Business Research & Entrepreneurship
- Workshops for High Technology Start-Up Companies: These workshops are intended to help start-up companies in
areas such as business planning, marketing, financing, and strategic planning. These workshops are held twice a
year and are open and free to the public.
- Workshops for Incubator Companies: For companies seeking incubation services, Arrowhead Center offers
workshops to fit your needs. These services include: insuring your company, legal issues in small business, filing tax
returns, among others. These workshops are also held twice a year and are open and free to those in need of incubation services.
- Professional Advisory Boards: The Arrowhead Center, under the ESB program, has established a Professional Advisory Board
comprised of business and industry experts as well as seasoned entrepreneurs. Each advisor shares their experience,
lessons learned, and new ideas to members of the Arrowhead research staff. Our researchers use this knowledge
to provide accurate and relevant research.
- Collaboration with Small Business Development Centers: Since the ESB program is funded by the SBA, it is only natural
that the Arrowhead Center collaborate with Small Business Development Centers in New Mexico. The Arrowhead Center has strong ties to these
Centers and combines resources to best serve their needs.
- Extension Services: As a part of New Mexico State University (NMSU), the Arrowhead Center works with state-wide extension
services to bring our services to your community. Extending beyond southern New Mexico, Arrowhead Center provides its
services to small businesses across New Mexico.
Business Incubation
As part of the ESB program, the Arrowhead Center offers expanded and accelerated business incubation services to start-up companies with a
relationship to NMSU. The Center and its community partners, as part of the ESB program, will facilitate faster, smarter start-up and growth
of start-up businesses, providing clients with various business development services.
By coordinating resources and encouraging
small companies to share ideas and experiences, the Arrowhead Center reduces the risk involved in starting a company and provide
start-ups access to facilities, services, and investment capital that might otherwise be unavailable. U.S. statistics show that business
incubators increase the success rate of start-ups from 20 percent to 87 percent. According to the National Business Incubation
Association (NBIA), 87 percent of incubator-hatched companies are still in business today, and 84 percent of those remain in the community.
The two primary goals of the Arrowhead Center’s business incubation activities are to have a positive impact on New Mexico’s economic
health by maximizing the success of emerging businesses and creating the incubator program to help small businesses sustain efficient
business operations.
Policy Analysis and Economic Studies
The Arrowhead Center disseminates business information and results of policy analyses and economic studies to help small businesses make more informed business decisions. New Services include:
- The Arrowhead Center Hotline: Accurate and timely business information is critical to the success of small businesses.
The Arrowhead Center has a Hotline that small businesses in New Mexico may access to get answers to
short-term requests. Information on a variety of business-related topics, such as current and projected demographics,
employment, industry, and labor force statistics, can be accessed through this Hotline.
